Free Power – an introduction to free electricity.

Power is the lynchpin holding life together in our world today. We depend on some form of power for almost every daily activity that can be thought of. So much so that a single day without the modern amenities made possible by power we would be left severely crippled. Severe after-effects of indiscriminate plundering of the environment have been evident for over a decade now. The need of the hour is to reign in our bludgeoning power demands or at the very least try to move to greener and more efficient sources of power - free power - which can help control the damage that has already been done. The answer probably lies in looking beyond the traditional fossil fuels and trying to harness alternative energy sources.

Not only are alternative energy sources a boon for our environment, they can also be economically way more efficient once they achieve a critical mass. A little example might clear things further. Hot water accounts for around 40% of total power costs in an average home and families can use as much as 200 liters of hot water per day. Solar water heating can reduce the cost of heating your household's water by up to 75% by utilising free power from solar energy. Other energy options like magnetic production of electricity can further cut down on this bill. There are numerous other things you can do to be energy-efficient and save money; put up thermal curtains, close doors and stop draughts, turn off unneeded lights, do a cold wash in the laundry, take shorter showers, turn off 'standby' appliances at the wall.

Solar power without a doubt is one of the most traditional ways of energy production other than fossil fuels of course. Development and use of solar power falls under two major areas, the first application of solar power is to make electricity for home power generation, the use in common processes, be it lighting, heating, cooking, and air conditioning for example. The other main category is the heating of a room or an entire home using the sun's rays as the heat source. This type of application is also commonly referred to as Solar Energy Homes. Homes that use free power like this can fall into multiple groups.

The key component in solar technology is a small device called a solar cell. This solar cell has the capacity to convert the sun’s rays into electricity. This solar cell, commonly made of silicon, can be fitted in any equipment along with appropriate chemical and physical changes to make the equipment run on free solar power. The entire manufacturing process to produce a solar cell is a little longer and incorporates the addition of other elements apart from silicon.

To assess the strengths and weaknesses of an alternative energy form, the history of its invention and implementation should be examined. The best part about free solar energy, apart from the more obvious cost savings, is the almost unlimited supply of energy that we receive from the sun. Solar power works well in places of abundant sunlight, but areas of low solar activity can also exploit this resource. Simply, wind energy is exactly what it sounds like, energy derived from the wind. We use the immense free power hidden in strong winds to generate power. Today we have wind turbines that are able to harness this power and convert it into electricity for use in homes, schools, businesses and any other establishments. The use of wind turbines for tasks like milling flour has been a very old concept. The increase in research and analysis into free energy sources has led to the discovery of efficient wind turbines as an effective power generation method.

Naturally, the generation of electricity using wind energy hinges on the efficiency of the wind turbine itself. A wind turbine works quite similarly to a dynamo on your bike. Generally a two-blade turbine faces away from the wind and a three-blade turbine faces into the wind. In fact today wind farms which produce free electricity on a massive scale are fairly widespread. When a large number of turbines are combined they can power entire communities and industries. Today single turbines are also available for commercial sale that you can place in your backyard and power up a portion of your homes power supply.

The biggest roadblock once again for this type of free power generation is the geography and the climate of the location involved. You don’t want to be stranded without power to cook food or heat your water because of lack of a breeze. The best way today is to combine wind energy with any other renewable energy source. If you have land to spare, get a couple of turbines and combine the power from this with solar roof panels. This way if one of the methods is not providing power, the other will. Solar is good for summer days and your turbines will typically produce more power during the winter months. The technology around wind turbines is still evolving and with every passing day we are faced with more advancement. The ultimate aim is to unplug yourself entirely from the grid and rely solely on two or three small turbines for home power generation. How long before this kind of free electric power is widley used remains to be seen.

Magnetic Power - free home power generation.

If someone told you about a build-at-home generator that will provide you with free  power, you would probably not believe them. This is a possibility today with magnetic energy. The biggest advantage is that it doesn’t depend on the geographical factors as much as other renewable resources.

Hydroelectricity - Using water for free power generation.

Hydro-electric power is the free electricity produced by the flow of fresh water from lakes, rivers, and streams. The flow of water carries kinetic energy as it flows downhill, obeying the rule of gravity. This kinetic energy can be converted into mechanical energy - e.g. by turning a turbine - and from there into electrical energy. Hydro-electric generation can be very cost effective at the right location in terms of watts generated per dollar spent. The amount of energy generated depends on the flow quantity of water and the height from which it falls on the turbine. As you see, once again the geography plays an important role here.

These days micro-hydroelectricity is also gaining popularity. Micro-hydro is useful for farmers and other people living in remote locations. Typically, a part of a river is diverted to be passed through a turbine to produce free electricity and then the water is returned to river - thereby reducing environmental impact. A hydro power plant is feasible only at higher altitudes. One disadvantage of using hydro energy for free power is the high maintenance cost due to the accumulation of silt in the dam or feeding channels. Regular cleaning of the installation is necessary to ensure longevity adds pain to this method of home power generation.

An increasingly deteriorating environment coupled with the current downhill economy has spawned numerous attempts to control wastage and to spend our resources more efficiently. There is no rocket science involved if we come down to it, remember the days when your family hung out wet clothes to dry on a sunny day. As demand increases, the existing utility companies will likely feel the heat of competition and face pressure to incorporate renewable energy as part of their power supply mix, benefiting the consumer and the environment.
